Getting pregnant may seem like it would be the most natural thing in the
world, and honestly, it is. Survival of the species dictates that we must be
able to reproduce and so reproduce we do! When we are young, we go out of
our way to avoid getting pregnant and, in fact we have devised quite a
number of highly effective ways to prevent pregnancy. There is not however
any method that is nearly as successful in encouraging and guaranteeing
pregnancy. Couples hoping to start their family at long last, often find
themselves discouraged and even a little shocked when it does not happen
right away. Even the most fertile couples are not guaranteed that all
attempts will result in pregnancy.
There are a lot of factors that come into play when it comes to whether or
not you will get pregnant at any point in time. The single most important
factor is that you must be ovulating in order to conceive. Ovulation is the
point in a woman’s menstrual cycle when she has a ripe, mature egg that has
been released from the ovaries and is ready to be fertilized by a sperm. The
window of opportunity to become pregnant during ovulation is less than a
week, so it is extremely important for couple trying to become pregnant that
they time their attempts to coincide with this period of the month.
Another extremely important factor in getting pregnant is that you are in
good health and that your mate has healthy, motile sperm. Motility refers to
the ability of a man’s sperm to swim and move, so that it will be able to
make its way to the waiting egg and fertilize it. Unlike women, who are born
with every unfertilized egg that they will ever produce already in their
ovaries, men create sperm continually, throughout their lives. There are
ways that men can promote healthy sperm production, such as limiting the
tightness of clothing and avoiding garments that hold the testicles too
close to the body.
Even with a perfectly healthy egg and perfectly healthy sperm, there is
still a chance that well timed intercourse will not result in a couple
getting pregnant. The best way to ensure that you get pregnant is to keep
trying and to consult with a physician to ensure that you are healthy enough
to become pregnant.
